Grosse Pointe South Varsity Red Barons 62- GP North Red Barons 26

The Grosse Pointe South Varsity Red Barons opened the season with a roar, defeating rival North 62-26. South running backs Sam Genna, Kareem Muhammad and Romari Ennis-Rodgers accounted for eight touchdowns on the ground, in the air, on kick-off and interception returns.

Muhammad put South up early with scores on a 20 yard run and a 50 yard aerial from Luke Riashi. Mac Cimmarrusti threw a perfect strike to Muhammad for 18 yards and a third touchdown, behind the blocking of Patrick Durkin, AJ Stevenson, Ryan Keating, Connor Mallegg, David Weldon and Alex Alli.

Sam Genna took over for Muhammad at tail back, and scored on runs of 62 and 20 yards. Genna also led the defense with two interceptions from his free safety position, including a 37 yard touchdown return. Genna, Andrew Trost, Michael Calcaterra, John Gough, Sam Jones and Garrett Hudson kept their opponents bottled up for most of the day from their outside linebacker and strong safety positions.

Markael Butler and Latorris Greer jump started the North offense, each taking long scoring runs to the house. But South's Genna answered with a 72 yard kickoff return that put the game on ice. Will Poplawaski and Ryan McWood added kicking PATs for South, while Patrick Nauert, Jon Martinuzzi, Lightning Luke Davey and Adam Elbadawi added running PAT's for South.

For North, Markael Butler executed an outstanding half-back pass to tight end Chuck Dunavan for a touchdown. And later in the game, Butler followed with a powerful 40 yard dash for the final North TD.

Romari Ennis-Rogers and Garret Hudson closed out the scoring for South, with runs of 60 and 48 yards, behind outstanding blocks from Patrick Nauert, Evan Gillooly, Cameron Ennis, Joe Calhoun, Nathan Lawrence, and Noah Francis.
